Edinburgh is Scotland's capital city and the City of Edinburgh
Council provides a range of public services to over 444,000
citizens. Edinburgh is at the heart of a diverse city region and is
a world influence in business, arts, science and financial
services, whilst also maintaining a strong tradition of culture.
Each year in excess of 3 million visitors attend one of the city's
internationally famous festivals.

Midlothian has a vibrant and competitive local economy.
Previously dominated by traditional industries such as coal mining,
it has been radically transformed in recent years into a key centre
of Scotland's knowledge economy. Midlothian has emerged as a UK,
European and International centre for the developing biotechnology
and life sciences sector and has a world-famous reputation for
research, development and production.

The devolved government for Scotland is responsible for most of
the issues of day-to-day concern to the people of Scotland,
including health, education, justice, rural affairs, and transport.
The Scottish Government's purpose is to focus government and public
services on creating a more successful country, with opportunities
for all of Scotland to flourish, through increasing sustainable
economic growth.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) is a
Government body which has a statutory duty to protect the
environment and human health by monitoring waste management and
disposal facilities. Their powers range from waste data reporting
to enforcing European compliance schemes.

Defra is the UK government department responsible for policy and
regulations on the environment, food and rural affairs. This site
provides up to date information on the different waste treatment
technologies being used in the UK.

The Zero Waste Scotland programme is funded by the Scottish
Government to support delivery of its Zero Waste Plan. The programme
integrates the activities of other current programmes: Waste Aware
Scotland; Envirowise Scotland; Remade Scotland; Keep Scotland
Beautiful; NISP; and the Community Recycling Network for
Scotland.

Planning Aid for Scotland was established to provide people
across Scotland with information and support to engage in the
planning system.

The Scottish Futures Trust is a Government-owned company set up
to improve public infrastructure investment. A representative of
SFT sits on the Zero Waste: Edinburgh and Midlothian project board
to provide support and advice on procurement issues.

Waste Aware Scotland is a government body set up to help educate
and encourage the public on how best to reduce, reuse and recycle.
They also carry out work with local authorities around specific
waste awareness campaigns.

Health Protection Scotland is a division of NHS National
Services Scotland. They plan and deliver effective and specialist
national services which co-ordinate, strengthen and support
activities aimed at protecting all the people of Scotland from
infectious and environmental hazards. A report on the Incineration
